AMD is the First to 1 GHz

Advanced Micro Devices was the first to reach the 1000 MHz mark with their Athlon processor. The Green Team beat Intel's Pentium III 1 GHz chip to market, by just a number of days. AMD did it and somehow pulled it off. On the consumer side, both Compaq and Gateway backed this Athlon processor at launch. The date was March 6, 2000.
