Tech Spot has reviewed the Acer Aspire X1200 SFF. It is Athlon 64 X2 4850e based. You can pick it up at CompUSA with 320GB hard drive here, and 500GB hard drive here. Pricing is $399.99 and $409.99 respectively.

The Aspire X1200 chassis is absolutely tiny - one of the smallest I have seen, which is great because it can snugly fit under an office cubicle desk or easily blend into a home theater setup. The system power button is neatly located on the top of the front bezel and has been nicely integrated with the rest of the case styling. An optical drive is mounted vertically and accessible by pressing the a button under the Acer logo on the front bezel. Directly below is the front panel I/O section, complete with a 14-in-1 card reader, mic and headphone jacks, five USB ports and a 1394 port. On the side of the front bezel is the Aspire nameplate and the hard drive LED activity light.

Lenovo ThinkCentre A62 Review PDF Print E-mail

CRN has reviewed the Lenovo ThinkCentre A62. The model they looked at is Phenom X4 powered. There are several ThinkCentre models here ranging from $600-$800.

The bottom line: The Lenovo ThinkCentre A62 performs well, provides a solid argument for eco-friendliness, and is priced competitively with AMD's quad-core technology. It's a peppy system that can provide nice quad-core capabilities without a VAR's customer having to pay a premium. AMD still has an uphill fight against Intel in quad-core desktop computing, but Lenovo has produced a system that shows AMD's platform can still compete.

Mac Pros Stink PDF Print E-mail

The Inquirer relays that Mac Pros stink More specifically they stink of benzene fumes.

Such was the concern of one user, a molecular biologist boffin working for the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), he decided to take the issue to Greenpeace. Greenpeace is notoriously impatient with Apple’s long history of poor environmental records, so the organisation decided it would rope in testing lab Analytica as well as France's industrial environment institute, Inéris, to check things out. The preliminary results of the lab’s tests were worrying to say the least, with benzene fumes reportedly being the cause of the "intense, nauseating" odour. The Enviro-mentalists were quick to point out that inhaling benzene fumes on a regular basis was not only less than ideal, but also potentially cancer-inducing, and urged Apple to look into the situation.

Hi. I'm a Mac. I cause cancer.

AMD CrossFire Contest PC: Components and Performance PDF Print E-mail

Firing Squad has posted up a story on a CrossFire Contest PC they built out.

In closing, we’d like to thank AMD for sponsoring this contest. They’ve certainly sent over high-end components; this will make a great gaming rig for the CrossFire contest winner, Astriir1. The only adjustment I’d suggest would be replacing the stock AMD cooler for an aftermarket heatsink/fan unit, and with the Cooler Master Cosmos CSX chassis he’ll have plenty of room to grow with additional drives.

NCIX AMD Platform System Review PDF Print E-mail

Motherboards.org has a review of the AMD platform from NCIX.

My overall experience from the shipping to support to testing and evaluating the system was a pleasant experience. Email correspondence took no more than 24 hours and the phone support was available during normal daytime working hours. Like most companies there is a restocking fee if you wish to return the system after 15 days, which is reasonable as you should know within that timeframe if the system is to your liking or not. NCIX seems to be on the right track and although here are always the chance of UPS/FedEx dropping your box NCIX does do a good job of packing the system, it could be a bit better with foam on the inside of the case to keep the CPU cooler or other parts from bring dislodged during shipping. Nothing is perfect, but if you are looking for a new PC NCIX is definitely a company worth considering for your buy. I give them an Editor’s Choice as my personal experience was much better than some other companies I have dealt with. NCIX makes a solid system, are pleasant to deal with and have good support for their customers, you can’t ask for much more than that.
