The ZDNet story details HP's new business line of desktops where it is hinted that an Athlon 64 version is coming. It should already be out, but HP isn't one to make sly moves. Let's hope it is not the ridiculous crippled non 64 bit chip. There is also this bit on the Athlon XP business desktop. Although the three new desktop lines from HP are all based on Intel hardware, the company will continue to offer a business desktop that includes Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon processor. HP will keep selling the Athlon XP-based Business Desktop D325, for the time being, Hemphill said. But he also indicated HP is working on a replacement machine. Why one would buy a computer based on Celeron is beyond me. Any IT guys out there purchasing those should be laughed at. |

The Inquirer reports that HP indeed insisted on 64 bit free Athlon 64s. Its nice to see HP is still retarded. HP told AMD that while it was suitably impressed with the performance characteristics of the K8, also known as Athlon 64 chip, it felt that its customers would be confused if they suddenly found themselves with 64-bittiness but without an operating system apart from Linux to run on it. Again, tell your friends, tell your enemies, don't buy that crippled laptop. |

SFFTech has a preview of the DFI Athlon 64 small form factor which is based on the new Antec SFF case. DFI?s included motherboard, the K8M800 Infinity, should pack more than enough power to keep enthusiasts happy. Three PCI slots, one full-size AGP slot (and room for full-size cards) mean that expandability is available, while FireWire, SATA, integrated Ethernet, and USB 2.0 round out the various features. The only potential negative is that the board only has two RAM slots?but given its plethora of other features (and the fact that 512 meg DIMMs don?t carry any real price premium over 256 meg DIMMs), it shouldn?t be an issue. |
