The Statesman hates Game.AMD.com. Unfortunately no one at the Statesman is qualified to write about gaming. I hate to bag on a local site. It?s not really my thing, you know. I like to accentuate the positive. Fill the world with joy and rainbows. I am known to eat delicious ice cream and smile while I do it.
But I?ve been poking around AMD?s new gaming portal Web site, which, in an inspired bit of branding is called ?AMD GAME!?
It was developed locally by a company called Design Reactor and when you first visit to the site, you see a nice graphic for ?Team Fortress 2.? This is a great game and a very recent one, so you hope that the site will have up-to-the-minute news and other content to keep you coming back. If they did know gaming they would know that ATI is Canada. This is not a local site. The gaming stuff originates from Cananada. |

Up at the Dallas Morning News, whose headquarters I visited a couple of years back when they were trying to do a gaming show, they talk about which companies might put out a console. And from their list I can tell you right now none of the above. I'm actually a little surprised IBM isn't already in the console business. The company makes or has a hand in the chips for all three of the newest systems. And Intel has done work on previous game consoles, so it's not like it's a new technology to it, either.
AMD might be another candidate, especially since it now owns graphics-card maker ATI. Since it would be building both the main processor and the graphics card (the two most critical components of any console) in-house, AMD could have unprecedented profit margins on every system it sells. |

Today AMD has unleashed a new gaming microsite to provide a forum for gamers to communicate, collaborate and stay in tune with the latest developments in PC gaming. Gamers will have the ability to access exclusive game content and contests while customizing aspects of the site to fit every user?s preferences. The site is now available on http://game.amd.com and here are some of the cool features worth mentioning:
Gaming: Dedicated news, reviews and other syndicated content such as trailers, screenshots, tips and tricks. Gamers are able to get a ?behind-the-scenes? look at AMD, while accessing exclusive game content. A system check is available on the site to ensure that every user currently has the minimum requirements to enable certain games. New drivers and utilities will be updated on an ongoing basis as well.
Community: Section will feature forums and articles on gaming, and hardware by partners, game developers, press and gamers themselves. An editorial focused feel provides users with a comfortable gaming community, enabling ongoing discussion and opinionated conversations.
Contests & Prizes: Monthly contests provide users with the opportunity to win exclusive prizes. For the month of September, gamers that register to the site will be entered into a draw to win two extreme gaming systems powered by AMD, the iBuyPower Gamers Fire 1950 and the CyberPower Gamer Ultra 8800 PRO. |
