MySQL has announced that Max DB 7.5.00.18 is now available in a Linux x86-64 flavor. With the new version 7.5.00.18, MaxDB is shipping with 64-bit support for Linux/AMD platforms.
MaxDB? has a long history in supporting 64-bit platforms since 1995 the database structures were adopted to 64-bit requirements to support the DEC OSF/1 platform. Subsequently, MaxDB was ported to the major 64-bit architectures. Since 1997/1998 IBM AIX, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, and FSC Reliant have been supported.
With SAP DB 7.4 the next platform joined the club in 2001: Windows (NT) on the IA64 Itanium architecture. Together with the rapid adoption of Linux, Linux on IA64 was supported in 2002 with SAP DB 7.4.03.
MaxDB for HP-UX/IA64 recently has been launched and there are further ongoing porting activities for MaxDB on Linux/IBM PowerPC/64, which should become available with the MaxDB 7.6 alpha-Version in late 2004.
At the end of the current list of porting targets are MaxDB on Windows/AMD x86-64 and on Windows/Intel x86-64.
Summing up, this shows that MaxDB development has always been aware of the 64-bit landscape and has extensive experience with the challenges of these architectures for nearly 10 years. You can download it here. |

Anandtech has a Linux CPU comparison where the Athlon 64 essentially whipes the floor with the P4 in all but a couple of benchmarks. 64 bit marks are also included, and of course you can't do that with the P4. Anandtech seems to forget that in their conclusion completely. No mention of the advantage of dual core coming next year is mentioned either. A straight comparison of processor against processor is not as simple as it looks. Price invariably becomes the strongest argument in buying one CPU over another. The cheapest CPU in our shootout (the Athlon 64 3500+) costs $350 while the Pentium 4 560 - if you can find it - retails for $500. The Pentium 4 3.4GHz Extreme Edition and Athlon FX-53 both retail for over $800. If you are considering a processor merely on bang for your buck, the Athlon 64 3500+ does not disappoint. The only real reason why anyone should even consider buying an Extreme Edition or FX processor would be for overclocking (if that's your thing). As we saw in most of our benchmarks, the 3800+ and the FX-53 performed very similarly, usually within 3% of each other. |
