Sun, the king of all other planets, has rolled out their new servers featuring AMD's 45nm Opteron, or Shanghai. The decent ones cost an arm and a leg, but you can get a lowend server for under $2,000.

Top 500 Supercomputer List Hits PDF Print E-mail

The Top 500 supercomputer list is out. You can check it out here. Seven of the top 10 have Opterons in them so that is not too bad, and is a testament to HyperTransports influence on the high end.

* A total of 379 systems (75.8 percent) are now using Intel processors. This is virtually unchanged from six months ago (375 systems, 75 percent). Intel continues to provide the processors for the largest share of TOP500 systems. * The IBM Power processors and the AMD Opteron family are almost tied as second most common processor family with 60 and 59 systems each (12 percent and 11.8 percent). Both had only minor changes from six months ago. * Multi-core processors are the dominant chip architecture. The most impressive growth showed the number of systems using the Intel Harpertown and Clovertown quad core chips, which grew from 102 last November to 252 systems in June and now 293 systems. * The majority of remaining systems uses dual-core processors. * 410 systems are labeled as clusters, making this the most common architecture in the TOP500 with a stable share of 82 percent. * Gigabit Ethernet is still the most-used internal system interconnect technology (282 systems), due to its widespread use at industrial customers, followed by InfiniBand technology with 141 systems.

I am going to try and make it down to the SC08 conference tomorrow here in Austin to check things out. Later this week Jeff will be somewhere top secret in town as well looking at something else of interest to some.

IT Pro has reviewed the Boston 3000GP Shanghai based server.

Moving on to the 3000GP itself and at first glance it looks to offer a remarkable specification for such a slim-line package. The key feature here is the 1U chassis is home to two separate motherboards and with dual sockets on each one it can deliver up to sixteen cores.

Cray XT Jaguar Top Supercomputer With 45,000 Opterons PDF Print E-mail

Information Week reports that in next weeks top 500 supercomputer list the Cray XT Jaguar with 45,000 Opterons will surpass IBM's Roadrunner as the top supercomputer in the world.

The faster Jaguar is expected to be a boon for U.S. industry by making it possible to perform "virtual prototyping" of complex systems and products. Such prototyping reduces development costs and shortens the time required to market new technologies, the DOE said. Jaguar is the result of a partnership between the DOE, the Oak Ridge lab, and supercomputer vendor Cray. The upgrade was accomplished by adding 200 cabinets of Cray's XT5, a Linux-based supercomputer that uses quad-core Opteron processors fromAdvanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD). The older Jaguar used 84 cabinets.

I'm going to expect that these are Barcelona, and not Shanghai, but it is possible that Cray got a large batch early I suppose. If anyone knows please pass the details on.

Hosted Under the HPC Advisory Council, Companies Provide Open Access to High-Performance Computing Cluster

SANTA CLARA, CA. and YOKNEAM, ISRAEL – November 11, 2008 – Mellanox® Technologies, Ltd. (NASDAQ: MLNX; TASE: MLNX), a leading supplier of semiconductor-based, server and storage interconnect products, today announced that as part of the HPC Advisory Council, Dell, AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) and Mellanox will provide open access to a jointly developed high-performance computing cluster in an effort to support the creation of new applications and workload best practices.

To create application and workload best practices, Mellanox, Dell, and AMD have provided a new Dell PowerEdge SC 1435 twenty-four node cluster, utilizing the latest Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors and Mellanox ConnectX® InfiniBand adapters to the HPC Advisory Council Cluster Center. The new cluster, named Osiris after the green Egyptian god, is located in the Mellanox facility in Santa Clara, California, and provides local and remote access for users. Remote access can be requested at www.mellanox.com/clustercenter.

"With the main goal of creating best practices within compute-intensive market segments, the HPC Advisory Council Cluster Center enables end users to benchmark their applications on industry-standard HPC environments," said Gilad Shainer, director of technical marketing at Mellanox Technologies. "Our own experience tells us that InfiniBand-based solutions can significantly improve productivity in many different markets, so we are pleased to see the HPC Advisory Council driving new collaborative efforts to extend the benefits of HPC technologies by reducing procurement cycles and installation time and making pre-tuned application guidelines available."

Dedicated technical teams from Dell, AMD and Mellanox will work with key organizations and independent software vendors to qualify, optimize, and explore ways to maximize compute system productivity. Together the companies will provide guidelines on using application-targeted clustering solutions in various technical computing markets such as weather analysis, automotive crash simulation, life science, bioscience, and oil and gas exploration.

"Dell HPC solutions are designed for simplification of use; to speed deployment times, lower the cost of management and provide the performance needed for innovation," said Judy Chavis, director of business development and product management, Dell Inc. "Our participation in the HPC Advisory Council allows Dell to develop deeper collaborations and create more robust solutions so organizations can focus on solving their most complex challenges rather than the underlying technology."

"Increasingly, high-performance computing (HPC) technologies and the rapid adoption of cluster computing continues to drive a variety of industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, and financial services," said Scot A. Schultz, senior strategic alliances manager, HPC, AMD. "We are working with the HPC Advisory Council to demonstrate innovative approaches to increase application productivity using AMD Opteron™ processors with Direct Connect Architecture for traditional HPC applications as well as mainstream business workloads including data warehousing, transaction processing and emerging technologies such as cloud computing."

The application productivity guidelines are available throughout the HPC Advisory Council web site (hpcadvisorycouncil.mellanox.com). While focusing on the most used applications, the collaborating companies work with end users to provide advisories for targeted application and workload optimization.

About the HPC Advisory Council

The HPC Advisory Council is a distinguished high-performance computing ecosystem that includes best-in-class original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), strategic technology suppliers, independent software vendors (ISVs) and selected end-users across the entire range of HPC market segments. The Council was formed to accelerate HPC innovations and new technologies, optimize system performance, efficiency and scalability and provide the best total solution to the end-user. The Council also operates an end-user advisory help desk to provide a centralized place for end-users' HPC-related questions, such as troubleshooting, system design and usage model advisory for overall system performance optimization. The HPC Advisory Council Cluster Center offers an environment for developing, testing, benchmarking and optimizing products based on leading-edge multi-core systems and the latest 40Gb/s InfiniBand technology.
