The Inquirer has a picture and details on the new Sun Fire X4***. It appears to be the world's first 4 Socket Opteron server in just 2Us. The line-up now includes the new Sun Fire X4140 (pictured below), Sun Fire X4240 and the industry’s only 4-socket x64 Opteron based server in a 2U form factor, the Sun Fire X4440. In addition, the Sun Fire X2200 M2, Sun Fire X4100 M2, Sun Fire X4200 M2 servers are now available with the Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor. |

Infoworld has a weblog podcast extravaganza using something called speech. That is crazy. They talk about Dell, and Sun, and AMD, and virtualization. Virtualization platform vendors like Citrix, Microsoft, Parallels and VMware are constantly trying to update and increase the capabilities of virtualization, but they aren't alone. Hardware manufacturers are also taking a stab at improving virtualization. Check out the latest from AMD's Quad-Core Opteron processor technology as it makes its way into new Dell and Sun servers. |

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has upgraded their Cray XT4 from dual to quad core Opterons. We do not know if they got the $1 CPU China deal that I wish I could get. "Compute performance has a direct impact on our ability to tackle the greatest engineering and scientific challenges we face, resulting in the breakthroughs that change society," said Dr. Thomas Zacharia, Oak Ridge National Laboratory associate director for computing and computational sciences. "The scalability, reliability and upgradeability of the Cray XT4 has made Jaguar an increasingly powerful computing resource for our researchers and scientists. This upgrade will enable even greater achievements in today's most important areas of science."
All of the Cray XT4 system's dual-core compute sockets were upgraded to Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors and the memory in each socket was doubled. So that is a hella upgrade. No word on if Jaguar is pronounced like the car. |
