AMD Extends ATI Stream Technology Leadership with DirectX 11 Hardware

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--AMD (NYSE: AMD) and CyberLink Corp announced the companies are expanding their existing engineering engagement with a strategic focus on Microsoft DirectX 11 DirectCompute, taking advantage of the capabilities of AMD’s new DirectX 11-capable graphics architecture. The companies will work together to accelerate many computationally intensive tasks in CyberLink applications, such as video transcoding, automated facial recognition and tagging, video editing and processing applications with ATI Stream technology using the full specification capabilities of the new Windows 7 DirectCompute API.

ATI Stream technology allows enabled applications to dynamically take advantage of both the multi-core central processing unit (CPU) and the graphic processing unit (GPU) in a PC for demanding algorithms such as video editing and transcoding from one video format to another. The ATI Radeon™ HD 5800 series is the only GPU hardware on the market today that supports the entire superset specification of Microsoft DirectX 11.

"CyberLink's applications are known for their intuitive experience and optimized performance," said Alice H. Chang, CEO of CyberLink. "DirectCompute enables our engineers to significantly ramp up the pace of development of our GPU accelerated software. Thanks to AMD's compelling

PC platforms with ATI Stream technology and support for DirectX 11, CyberLink is leading the industry in accelerating photo and video software performance with DirectCompute."

As the first software developer to take advantage of ATI Stream technology to leverage multi-core CPUs and GPUs to accelerate execution of highly parallel functions, CyberLink continues to set new standards of performance and interactivity across their product offerings.

Fudzilla reports that AMD's next gen part is code named. Hecatoncheires will be the name for this 2010 part.

The codename is Hecatoncheires, named after gigantic fifty headed creatures of great strength in Greek mythology which despite being weaker than Titans, managed to beat them. A simple analogy would put Nvidia in the role of Titans, and since Hecatoncheires had more heads, this would suggest a larger chip with more shaders.

Tweaktown reports that Nvidia has responded to AMD's views on DirecX 11. Apparently there was some spat to a questionaire that

3) You've seen our results of the HD 5870 in Crossfire; this should give a good understanding of what the HD 5870 X2 is going to offer. Is NVIDIA confident in saying that come launch of the GT 300 the red teams graphics cards are something we're going to be forgetting about?

We are confident that when the Fermi-based GeForce products ship that we will maintain our performance crown. Even today our GeForce GTX 285 significantly outperforms the HD 5870 in next gen games like Batman Arkham Asylum with physics. In fact, even our GeForce GTS 250 outperforms it. That's fundamentally the difference between us and AMD. We focus on graphics plus cool effects like physics and 3D stereo, whereas AMD just makes incremental changes to their graphics cards.
