AMD On Nvidia PhysX Disabling PDF Print E-mail

Icrontic discusses Nvidia's recent move to disable PhysX when an AMD video card is present with a Nvidia one. So if your graphics is driven by a Radeon, then your second GeForce can't do PhysX work any more. Of course, again, no one cares about PhysX. Why? Where are the games at that support it and are good? Oh, yeah.

PhysX is an open software standard. Any company can freely develop hardware or software that supports it. NVIDIA supports GPU accelerated PhysX on NVIDIA GPUs while using NVIDIA GPUs for graphics. NVIDIA performs extensive Engineering, Development, and QA work that makes PhysX a great experience for customers. For a variety of reasons–some development expense some quality assurance and some business reasons–NVIDIA will not support GPU accelerated PhysX with NVIDIA GPUs while GPU rendering is happening on non-NVIDIA GPUs. I’m sorry for any inconvenience caused but I hope you can understand.

Nvidia Didn't Block AA From AMD In Batman PDF Print E-mail

Fudo reports that Nvidia says they did not block Radeon's from being able to do AA in the new Batman game. In fact they had to work with the developer to enable that feature or other wise we'd be looking at yet another crappy console port.

When it comes to anti-aliasing in the game, this is not a feature you turn on and Nvidia had to program and make it work on this title. They did it for their cards and due to the time they didn’t test if it works on ATI cards. This was ATI’s job as ATI also have a smaller developer relations team that was supposed to get AA in this game. They didn’t do it and we can only speculate on the reasons. This communication was supposed to take place between game developers and ATI, and Nvidia claims that they would not and didn’t ever prevent a developer to talk to another graphics card vendor.

Radeon HD 5750 Benchmarked PDF Print E-mail

Fudo reports that the Radeon HD 5750 has been benchmarked.

Anyway, in synthetic tests the HD 5750 manages to beat both the HD 4850 and the GTS 250, although by a rather tight margin. According to GPU-Z, the HD 5750's core clock is 625MHz, while memory is clocked at a surprisingly high 1150MHz, offering 73.6GB/s of bandwidth. We're really not sure about the memory spec, this seems a bit too fast, so take these numbers with a grain of salt.

AMD Touts Physics, Nvidia Disables It PDF Print E-mail

The Inquirer talks about AMD touting physics on their Radeons.

In announcing the initiative, AMD chief graphics technology officer Eric Demers took a swipe at rival Nvidia and its proprietary PhysX engine. "Proprietary physics solutions divide consumers and independent software vendors, while stifling true innovation. Our competitors even develop code that they themselves admit will not work on hardware other than theirs," he said.

Meantime at Fudo's Nvidia is disabling PhysX on Radeons.

All this is strange as it has pushed PhysX as an open standard that can be used even by its arch-rival ATI. In fact there is an element of cutting its nose off to spite its face. PhysX support seems now to be limited to the installed base of the GeForce and does not allow to use it on machines featuring even other graphics accelerators. Those who need PhysX should only upgrade to Nvidia graphics boards if keeping the old card for PhysX we guess.

So you better not mix and match. All of this would matter if PnysX did matter, but it does not. They simply didn't listen to me all those years ago in LA. Oh well.
