AMD Eyefinity CrossFire 6 Screen Review Wednesday, 05 May 2010 15:42       Last September I was lucky enough to have AMD fly me out to California way to check out the unveiling of Eyefinity on the USS Hornet.  Its a ship, not a boat.  It was quite the tech demo with a variety of games on display and plenty of partners showing off wares.  There was a bit of a look at the Frostbyte 2 engine that powers Battlefield Bad Company 2 now, a teaser of Aliens versus Predator, and some Crytek guys were on hand showing off their new engine.  The main attraction was the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity Edition that packed 6 mini display port connectors and would single handedly push 6 monitors.  Dirt 2 was the demo of choice although we also saw some Left 4 Dead action.  Flash forward half a year and now many more games support Eyefinity, and at long last the Eyefinity Edition has arrived.
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Overclocking Tuesday, 27 April 2010 00:59 About the worst kept secret around was that AMD was prepping a 6 core CPU called Phenom II X6. Today AMD launches two new 6 core models, the 3.2GHz Phenom II X6 1090T and the 2.8GHz 1055T. Each has a TDP of 125 watts, and each features AMD's new turbo core frequency. AMD includes a 128KB L1 cache, 1 512KB L2 cache per core, and 6MB of L3 cache shared with each core. The complete list of specs is below.
ATI Radeon 5670 Thursday, 14 January 2010 01:51 We are well on our way into the New Year and as of yet ATI continues to face no real challenge from Nvidia on the DirectX11 front. This seems to be eerily familiar in a role reversal with ATI now leading the way and Nvidia lagging behind. It was way back in September when ATI launched it's new product which seems light years ago. In the mean time ATI continues to pump out SKUs in the 5000 series this time with the Radeon 5670, the first DX11 sub-$100 graphics card.
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE 125W Wednesday, 04 November 2009 04:16 Similarly as they did with the original Phenom processor lineup AMD have made some improvements in their Phenom II line up and today announced new 125W Phenom II X4 965 BE processors. Previously the TDP rating was 140W, which follows a similar pattern the Phenom 9950 had. You won't see any difference in benchmarks, unless of course you overclock this higher which AMD also claims the new chips should do. It also looks like AMD is trying to clear out of their stock of Phenom II X2 and X3 processors. We don't be doing any benchmarks but there are overclocking numbers, power consumption numbers, and voltage numbers.
AMD/ATI has released a beta Catalyst 10.7a driver that fixes the anti aliasing in Starcraft II. It has to be enabled in the Control Center. Also this enhances performance in Quad ATI CrossFireX configurations.

Semi Accurate details some performance numbers for AMD's upcoming Llano and Ontario Fusion class CPU/GPUs with floating point and integer ops under Linux.

It’s hard to draw any real conclusions from the numbers, as the clock speeds for the two CPUs aren’t listed. Without knowing that it’s hard to compare the processors to current products in the market, but the Ontario is looking a lot more “ready” than the Llano. The only numbers on offer is measured floating point and integer speeds in million ops/sec, The Ontario comes out with 1,351 million ops/sec for floating point and 3,047 million ops/sec for integer performance running Windows Server 2008 of all things.

iXBT Labs tests out AMD's 2010 CPUs.

The total score is adequate to the spirit of the times. Multicore solutions are favored, even with a smaller cache. Now without peculiarities, though: 16 benchmarks out of 57 preferred fewer cores and larger L2 cache. We are tempted to say that certain programmers are to blame for not being able to fully use the resources of modern CPUs. But we're still optimistic, because such benchmarks are in the minority. As for practical recommendations, in case of Athlon II CPUs, three cores are definitely better than two.

Techspot has compared performance on Starcraft II on CPUs and GPUs.

The problem lies in that StarCraft II will only utilize two cores and as a result a Phenom II X4 965 will not be any faster than a Phenom II X2 555. This proved to be a real issue for older quad-core processors like the Core 2 Quad Q6600, which delivered very poor performance even when overclocked to 3.0GHz. When testing we found that a minimum frame rate of 30fps was ideal, sadly the Q6600 only allowed for a minimum frame rate of 22fps when coupled with the mighty GeForce GTX 480.

Well that sucks. Come one Blizzard. Take advantage of more than two cores. This is not console.

News - Gaming

Tweaktown has tested out the new AMD ATI Catalyst Radeon super chimpokomon 10.7 drivers.

On the performance side of things we don't see anything new out of the driver. It's funny, but when talking to people it seems that most are sitting on the 10.4 drivers still, which seem to have been the best this year. To be honest, if there's nothing that stands out for you in the release notes, there's no real reason to upgrade.

CNet reports that AMD has edged Nvidia in Q2 video card shipments for discrete parts.

AMD's ATI graphics unit took 51 percent of the standalone, or "discrete," graphics chip market compared to Nvidia's share that was just shy of 49 percent, according to Mercury Research, a Cave Creek, Arizona firm that tracks graphics chip shipments. This is a sharp reversal from the same period a year ago when Nvidia had about 59 percent of the market and AMD had just under 41 percent.

So it has not been the best week over at Nvidia. The GeForce 460 should help stop the bleeding a bit.

The Motley Fool reports that AMD is in, and Nvidia is out of Apple's iMac lineup.

As it turns out, that's baloney. Apple just updated its computer systems, and the new iMacs and Mac Pro systems now come exclusively with AMD graphics inside. Apple already offered AMD's ATI Radeon chips as either standard or upgrade graphics on some system models, but the difference now is that you can't get an NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA) GeForce card in your desktop Mac even if you wanted to.

The base configuration of the XPS 7100 is powered by a 2.8 GHz AMD Phenom II X6 1055T processor. This six-core processor gives it decent performance, although it lags behind some competitors with multi-core Intel chips. Still, you should be able to perform all of your common tasks like Internet surfing, instant messaging, multimedia usage, and more without trouble. To aid with multitasking and running multiple applications at the same time, the desktop comes with 6 GB of DDR3 SDRAM.

Expert Reviews-Mesh Matrix 945CS review
With its midi tower case, the Mesh Matrix 945CS is small enough to hide behind its 22in monitor, and quiet enough to go un-noticed. It still packs a decent punch, however, with an AMD Phenom II X4 945 that helped it post a respectable score of 107 overall in our benchmarks.

Ars Technica-Counterpoint: Intel and Apple clash by no means inevitable
The theory put forward by our own Jon Stokes is essentially that Intel is muscling in on Apple's domain—smartphones—and that Intel's PC processors are increasingly unsuitable for Apple's demands due to Intel's use of CPU-integrated graphics processors. Together, these factors will drive Intel and Apple apart, forcing the system builder to go to AMD to source its processors.

Fortune-What the Dell settlement means for Intel
Amid accusations of both earnings manipulation and apparent antitrust violations, the SEC paints a picture of the computer industry in which the near-monopolist Intel (INTC, Fortune 500) is the master puppeteer and the computer makers are little more than its marionettes. When Intel rival AMD (AMD, Fortune 500) first propounded this dark view of the world in an antitrust suit against Intel in June 2005 it seemed like a wacky conspiracy theory; now it has been endorsed by regulators for 30 countries, including ours.

The Motley Fool-Should You Care If Rambus Beats NVIDIA?
The reason why I find that interesting is that forcing NVIDIA to raise product prices or lower profit margins would be a positive for AMD. The ATI division is, after all, the only competition NVIDIA has in many market segments. Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) sells more graphics chips than anybody, but they're all of the low-performance and low-margin variety, while ATI/AMD and NVIDIA tend to aim a bit higher. NVIDIA has been doing a pretty good job of holding itself back in recent years, including the time it spends in other courtrooms fighting the legal eagles of Intel. But anything that hampers the company any further should be good news for AMD.

CRN-AMD boosted by Stone partnership
The three-year agreement will see Stone incorporate the vendor's Athlon II dual- and quad-core processors into its kit. The public sector-focused system builder said the partnership would allow it to give greater choice to customers. Stone is expecting to ship 100,000 desktops built on AMD technology during 2010 alone.

EE Times-Analysts cut estimates for Nvidia
''Third, some worry that Nvidia is losing GPU share to AMD in notebook PCs. Fourth, many investors we speak with think management over-hypes its Tegra, Tesla, and Fermi growth opportunities, thus negatively affecting its Street credibility. Fifth, if channel inventories continue to grow (not likely now), 3Q could be a sub-seasonal sequential growth quarter as inventory replenishment ceases, contrary to some expectations,’’ he added.
