The Workstation Market Revitalized in 2005, States Jon Peddie Research Workstation Report

TIBURON, Calif.--Oct. 12, 2005--Jon Peddie Research

-- AMD's Platform Share More Than Doubles, But Intel Not Suffering -- At Least Not Yet

-- Dell and Nvidia Dominate, But HP and ATI Threaten

2005 is shaping up to be a solid year for the workstation and professional graphics market, Jon Peddie Research reports in the latest installment of its Workstation Report series, providing the most in-depth look at the fast-changing landscape for professional computing markets and technologies. Workstation vendors shipped 503.8 thousand branded workstations in the second quarter of 2005, accounting for almost $1.3 billion in revenue. That bodes well for the year, which promises to deliver growth in total revenue, bucking the declines of recent years.

Dell continues to dominate the workstation market with a share of about 43%, and HP follows, recently narrowing Dell's lead slightly. Lenovo has jumped directly to the #3 position, thanks to picking up ThinkPad-branded mobile workstations from IBM. IBM, Sun and Fujitsu-Siemens round out the top six.

The Inquirer claims Crossfire will come available next week. That is great and all, but with no motherboards it isn't really available. If so this would be another in a round of delays for the SLI competitor. Luckily for ATI 32X SLI is also delayed unless your dumb enough to buy a Dull.

Spansion Announces World's First Single-chip 1 Gigabit NOR Flash Memory; First Samples Based on 90-Nanometer MirrorBit(TM) Technology

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--Oct. 12, 2005--Spansion LLC, the Flash memory venture of AMD (NYSE:AMD) and Fujitsu Limited (TOKYO:6702), today announced it is sampling the world's first single-chip 1 gigabit (Gb) NOR Flash memory device to customers in the embedded market. Based on 90-nanometer (nm) MirrorBit(TM) technology, the 1 Gb MirrorBit GL device is the highest density, single-chip NOR Flash memory device on the market. It is designed for reliable code execution and data storage in a wide range of embedded applications including automotive navigation systems, communications infrastructure equipment, gaming and industrial control. The 1 Gb MirrorBit GL device is the first based on the Spansion 90-nm MirrorBit process technology unveiled last month.

"Our innovative MirrorBit technology has enabled us to reach this very important milestone, with a product that meets the density, quality, cost structure and scalability needs of the diverse embedded market," said Ian Williams, corporate vice president of marketing for the Embedded Memory Division for Spansion. "High density single-chip NOR Flash memory products help customers lower their design cost, enhance end product features, and ensure reliable, fast code execution. In addition, with this added storage capacity, customers can leverage a single chip for both code execution and data storage."

The Street reports that Prudential has cut Intel to underperform a few days after they raised AMD's target to $28. This is in sharp contrast to Intel's new marketing team/analyst group UBS.

Intel faces decelerating notebook and personal computer revenue growth, no operating system catalyst in 2006, rising competition from Advanced Micro Devices, and a shift to lower-end CPU sales, the brokerage warned.

Windows Xp64 Support.. And Why did I buy a 64bit processor again? PDF Print E-mail

Think Computers asks why they bought a 64 bit processor.

Why aren't companies moving to 64bit, the 64bit processor has been out for quite a while now and has pretty much become the standard processor, prices are low enough that pretty much anyone can afford one. Yet, I don't see anything that actually takes advantage of a 64bit CPU, sure we got Far Cry 64bit edition, woo-hoo, I can't even get it to work on Xp64.... Go figure, so I can't tell you what looks different about it. I don't see any companies announcing any new software for 64bit computing.

Applications that take advantage of 64 bit are moving to it. I post to usually at least one press release a week with a new 64 bit application. Of course Longhorn is when 64 bit will begin to hit stride on the desktop. Today we are enjoying server and workstation apps that take advantage.
