Tweaktown has details on AMD's upcoming Radeon HD 7790 GPU.  

The Radeon HD 7790 looks to skip the "Pitcairn" and "Cape Verde" silicons, moving directly to an entirely new ASIC codenamed "Bonaire". The first SKU to be built on this silicon will be the Radeon HD 7790, which should feature 896 stream processors, and will perform at around 10% slowly than the HD 7850. This should definitely take some of the lime light away from the GTX 650 Ti, and if AMD work on the price, they could move a lot of that lime light away.

As for today’s hardware, we haven't seen anything surprising in the new 3DMark. The dual-processor GeForce GTX 690 is easily ahead in every test since we don’t have a GeForce GTX Titan or a dual-processor Radeon HD 7990 in this test session. The Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition is superior among single-GPU products, beating the GeForce GTX 680 in every graphics and combination subtest. This pair is followed by the GeForce GTX 670 and Radeon HD 7950 which are comparable to each other, never breaking apart by more than 1 or 2%. Identical performance can also be observed in the pairs of Radeon HD 7870 vs. GeForce GTX 660 Ti and Radeon HD 7850 vs. GeForce GTX 660, although the AMD products are preferable in terms of pricing. Unfortunately, junior AMD-based solutions are too weak for 3DMark and fail to compete against the GeForce GTX 650 Ti. We also didn’t include any slower graphics cards into the today’s gaming test session, which proved to be the right decision (judging by the results of the HD 7750).

AMD details their new TRESSFX hair show cased in next weeks Tomb Raider release.  The original Tomb Raider was one of the first true hardware accellerated 3D games that made that Monster3D purchase back in the day worth it.

DirectCompute is additionally utilized to perform the real-time physics simulations for TressFX Hair. This physics system treats each strand of hair as a chain with dozens of links, permitting for forces like gravity, wind and movement of the head to move and curl Lara’s hair in a realistic fashion. Further, collision detection is performed to ensure that strands do not pass through one another, or other solid surfaces such as Lara’s head, clothing and body. Finally, hair styles are simulated by gradually pulling the strands back towards their original shape after they have moved in response to an external force. Graphics cards featuring the Graphics Core Next architecture, like select AMD Radeon™ HD 7000 Series, are particularly well-equipped to handle these types of tasks, with their combination of fast on-chip shared memory and massive processing throughput on the order of trillions of operations per second.

Jon "Cananada" Peddie Research has reported that GPU shipmetns were down for AMD, Nvidia, and Intel in Q4 of 2012.  

The news was disappointing for every one of the major players. AMD dropped 13.6%, Intel slipped the least, just 2.9%, and Nvidia declined the most with 16.7% quarter-to-quarter change, this coming on the heels of a spectacular third quarter. The overall PC market actually grew 2.8% quarter-to-quarter while the graphics market declined 8.2% reflecting a decline in double-attach. That may be attributed to Intel's improved embedded graphics, finally making "good enough" a true statement.

As for enthusiasts, the implication that they’re not going to see anything faster than Tahiti until the next generation products at the end of this year is unfortunately unlikely to go over well. Enthusiasts have become used to annual GPU refreshes, and while they’re still somewhat here as we’re seeing with Sea Islands, that era appears to be coming to a close as microarchitectures improve, development costs go up, and the rate of introduction for new fabrication processes slows. And certainly this is quite a departure from the norm. But if nothing else, AMD is right about a couple of things: as it stands AMD is already competitive with NVIDIA’s contemporary high-end offerings, and they're finally competitive with NVIDIA when it comes to developer outreach. Ultimately with the success of the 7900 series AMD today is in a comfortable place, leaving them free to focus on what they already have and how to improve those sales even further.
