well i read this review and thought that it was good enough to drop in here for the K8 users that want top of the line memory

The Mushkin eXtreme Performance 2GB XP4000 dual channel pack is one heck of a bottleneck reducer and one of the fastest set of Mushkin modules to pass through our test beds. Our system ran at a HTT of 250 MHz for the first time since we put this rig together and that says alot about the ram we have stuffed in this rig over the last few months. The Mushkin eXtreme Performance 2GB XP4000 comes with excellent stability, functionality and looks giving users a real world synthetic maximum read/write of over 7000 MB/s using the latest popular benchmarking utilities.

actually you can sell a testicle for about $100,000 to some universities. Im sure you can get a lot of memory with that.

Best memory? Depends somewhat on your particular motherboard & if you overclock.

IMO, Samsung TCCD on Brainpower PCB is best for AMD64....It requires very little vdimm to hit high FSB & runs cooler due to its not needing incredible amounts of vdimm.

It won't run real low timings like BH-5 even with vdimm up to 3 or 3.1 vdimm but it won't create heat. Looser mem timings on amd64 aren't critical to performance like socket A.

AMD64 already has lower latency access due to its imbedded mem controller.

tccd on brainpower pcb only needs 2.8 or 2.85 vdimm to hit 260+ fsb.

My only problem with BH-5 is that on many A64 boards, you can't run 1T with them. Many of the BH-5's are sold as PC-3500/PC-3700, but are in fact PC-2700. Will they hit that 35-3700? Absolutely, and then some, BUT many boards use the SPD to determine whether it will run at 1T. My Buffalo PC-3700 BH-5's won't, but they will hit an ungodly high frequency. Since they don't run at 1T, I don't use them on my A64 systems. They're being used on an XP system.

So, let's bend this topic a little in one direction.

I've seen numerous reviews of memory and have almost come to the conclusion that in order to get a decent overclock, let's say 15% and remaining at 1:1, 1T, CL2.5 or better, you need to overvolt your memory to 2.8v or higher. Is that always the case?

Okay, let's say we're talking about my HTPC1 in my sig and I'm looking to replace that memory. For those of you not up on the ASROCK board it has, there's a 2.7v max on its VDIMM. Pretty low, I know.

Which memory will let you pull a decent overclock at 2.7v? Price does count. We want cheap. We want low voltage. We want cool temps. We want the ability to later run 4 sticks and STILL get a decent but slightly more relaxed OC (220-230mhz FSB).

Does this cheap memory exist?

I definitely don't mean to insult Jeff by saying this (my apologies if it's taken that way), but his last article was pulled for some sort of question about whether he had the right memory, and the others are starting to get dated.

The memory he tested last year is likely not made of the same chips that you would buy today. You can usually tell that by looking at the amateur reviews on NewEgg. You might notice a wave of 5 star reviews followed by a wave of 2 star reviews, then back to 5 star reviews... That's generally indicating production changes in the product during that time...

I was just hoping someone here might have recent experience with one of the off brands (ie not corsair xms, not ocz gold, but maybe more like apacer, transcend, ultra, buffalo, etc)

that is why you buy by the product number , when they change the chips , they change the product number

Corsair's memory tops the 3DMark Hall of Fame
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=5956

Now here's a good bit of publicity for Corsair, DDR2 memory and AMD's socket AM2. K|ngp|n, or as he's known in Real LifeTM, Vince Lucido, has clocked his way to the top of the 3DMark scoreboards in the 2006, 2005 and 2003 versions of the benchmarking software.

Also in the system used by Vince was an FX-62 AM2, GeForce 7900GTX - two in SLI, in fact, running on a Foxconn C51XEM2AA motherboard. Corsair sent us a pic of the feat, taken just a few days ago...
