I have a gateway 7405GX with 1 gig of ram. I want to upgrade to 2 gig but according to gateway.com the maximum supported ram is 1 gig.

do i have any options or workarounds to solve this problem or am i just screwed? or is that just gateway BS?

13" to 14" will suit you.
You'll need a good graphics processor and a built-in dvd-rom.
