I disassembled my Acer notebook battery because it did not work anymore. Curious as I am I looked at the way it is build. And suddenly I understood why most notebook batteries are explosion sensitive. What they do is parallel 2/3 Lion batteries to get the wanted power.
Because Lion batteries have sense lines on each cell to prevent dangerous situations, for instant 1 cel charging/discharging better than the other 1, paralleling 2 cells can be dissasterous in worst case situations.
For a battery of 14.8V/4400 mAH one needs 8 cells of ICR-18650J lion cells. 4 cells of paralleled couples gives 4 x 3.7V = 14,8 V.
Now if 1 cell gets worse qualities after a period of time the sense line senses the average voltage across the 2 cells and the processor decides to charge it average like meaning the worst 1 will be overcharged and could explode with all the consequences afterwards.
Scarry practices. Because I do Radio Controlled cars with lipo batteries I know bigger single cells are no problem. But for some reason they are probably too expensive for notebooks.
