@ rxzt190, 781 is not an SMP client it's a single core WU, and is worth only 565 points.

Stop the client and add the -oneunit flag only, than restart the client. That way it will finish the WU and shut down. After it's finished remove the -oneunit flag and add the -smp flag, the next WU it picks up will be a SMP WU.

I agree with Karamiekos, get a laptop cooler.

Karamiekos wrote:I agree the program should be -smp aware, and if the hardware is capable the software should automatically use it.

I'm would think that a core duo would still have more umph than that. If you right click on the top taskbar and add an applet called cpu frequency Scaling monitor, it will tell you if you are running @ full speed. Folding at Home does not kick up my processor from 800Mhz to 1.8Ghz....it tries to fold right at 800Mhz, painfully slow.

you might be able to open another console and type

sudo cpufreq-selector -g performance

That will force the CPU to max speed. You may be prompted for your password.

If that doesn't work you probably have to install some things in Synaptic Package Manager, under System and Admin. I have cpufrequtils, gnome-applets, libcpufreq0, and powernowd. Now I think powernowd may be AMD specific I am not sure, but we want to be able to make sure it is spinning that baby up all the way. If you do some Google work maybe you can find something out for on the Intel side.

If you hadn't ran the -smp flag and you got a work unit, you may want to stop the client and delete the work folder and the queue file. If you don't delete those and just try to re-run the client it will just work on the uni-core work unit it started with.

Jesus, If I had to do all that just to get a laptop to fold I'd throw the bloody thing out the window.
What a pain in the proverbial...

Is anyone else experiencing SMP WU's that stall out at 20% or so?

It ticked me off a few weeks ago when they were dying at 5% or 6% but this is absolutely maddening. I've had 5 die on me like that. I'm no mathematician but I do know 20% 5 times is 100% and that could have been a completed WU.

Could you post the log? Is it folding OK now?

Watch out muziqaz, if things stay as they are, the Zone will pass your team in June or July of 2010

or maybe even in May, if mpcamer would start to do some REAL folding

I had two SMP's just quit on me. Not at 20% though. One was at 99% and it just stopped, the other was had finished and gave a warning about a problem that could mean a more serious issue. I didn't write it down so I can't say exactly what it was. The one that stopped at 99% finished after wiping out the core and letting download a new one. The machine with the error message would not restart until I removed the core and the queue. After that it started fine and it's still running good tonight. The third SMP machine didn't give me any trouble. It's running vista. The two that gave me trouble are both running XP.

Don't be too hard on Matt, you know he's from Chicago and we all know how much trash talking comes out of that town.

He reckons his psu is playing up. The real story is that his preacher told him to say it..

woah woah woah..

Don't talk about my dad that way and -- the PSU problem was that I needed an extra PCI-e power connector.. but I didn't want to let the cat out of the bag, so I just said it was a PSU problem.

I am not from Chicago. That'd be like me telling you that you are from New Zealand. :)

I'm 150 miles south of Chicago.. Really, a lot of us down here wish that Chicago was a seperate state. Dwjs is from Chicago.

now hold on....

I'm closer to Chicago then MP but I don't live there. It's a nice place to visit and take pictures but it's a rotten city because of the people that run it.

I have no association to the city, therefore I can be trusted

WTG MP in your production stats. Brutis must be planning something to regain his crown.

I'm most likely closer to downtown than either of you as the crow flies.
Valparaiso, Indiana here.

However, we're all talking about a hundred miles more or less here.
That's just a days walk in Aussie-land.
Just a stretch of the legs really on a walk-about eh??

In other news, AMD might be a buy at $2.50,
while the new OPterons don't blow the doors off Intel, they are socket upgrades.
In today's business market, which are you more likely to do: Upgrade your entire motherboard, memory and CPU, or just slap a CPU upgrade into your existing equipment!!
WOOT WOOT...go AMD....

Also, just to throw out a FOLDING item.

Cal will be integrated into Cat drivers in December.

My problems were with an X3 running XP. My X2 (XP) and Pentium D (Ubuntu) haven't had this problem once. I had another one today so that puts me up to 6 SMP clients that went south.

I've had to quit one of my SMP's because it was taking to much CPU power away from a GPU wu. The other three however are running fine today. 2 on XP the third Vista64. Knock on wood, so far today nothing has crashed.

And btw, i'm like 25 miles from chicago. I can be down there in 20 minutes if traffic is good, which it usually isn't. And to stay on topic, I think i'm the closest person to chicago that folds and talks in these forums, unless someone else pipes in and we find they are closer. Where is Daneville MP?
