In the specs of HD5870: http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/ ... tions.aspx
it is stated that it has Integrated HD audio controller that is capable of high bit rate 7.1 channel surround sound over HDMI with support for lossless compression Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats (and appearently uncompressed LPCM as previous Radeon HDs).

So, it is clear that it supports (with appropriate software, etc.) TrueHD/Master-Audio PASS-TROUGH from Blu-ray disc to the HDMI output on the videocard. Appearently current software players support DECODING of TrueHD/Master-Audio from Blu-ray disc to output as analog (back panel jacks)/LPCM (trough the HDMI).
1. So, Is there any offloading to the GPU for the audio decoding?

2 (main question). Also I can't see if the Radeon HD5 audio controller supports ENCODING of the computer sounds to TrueHD/Master-Audio for output to the HDMI. I mean TrueHD/Master-Audio for sound/music in games, internet media, and even windows beeps.

3. Also is "encoding" 7+1 channel 192kHz 32bit/24bit supported at least for LPCM output to HDMI of these sources?

Not-exactly Radeon-related questions:
4. Is it better to have a dedicated audio controller in the GPU (as Radeon HD) or to use mainboard southbridge controller and codec chip and pass audio trough PCIe to the GPU (as Geforce DX10.1/40nm)?

5. What is happening to DirectSound3D/3D-positioning and effects for sounds in games for 5+1/7+1 setups (and even 2+1 "virtual surround")?

6. Are there any "HDMI computer speakers" or "SPDIF computer speakers" sets (that include their own DAC and amplifier)?

I don't think you really want HDCP audio. The only reason it exists is because of the MPAA DOSEN'T trust the average consumer and they want to remove ALL Fair Use.
see:http://www.defectivebydesign.org
and:http://bluraysucks.com/
HDMI and HDCP exist to keep you from encoding.
16 exbibytes ought to be enough for anybody

Has anyone cracked BD yet?
I bought a BD/HD-DVD/DVD player for my computer and a Harry Potter BD movie not long ago and I was disgusted to find the player had to connect to the internet and download files BEFORE the disc would even play...My god it's just unbelievable what the MPAA-RIAA have done and I had no idea it was so bad. I even had to make my player select a region before it would play. I call it legalised theft and these guys deserve to be pirated. I've always disagreed with pirating but not anymore. FFS I can't even make a backup copy of the movie.

Any idea on what I could read to help me get around this virus called DRM?

BTW the quality was nothing to write home about, if anyone is thinking of buying some BD discs, don't bother and save your money.

aussie :)
BD are cracked. You can get loads of BR rips all over the place. I haven't tried to play BR disc on PC, but on PS3, you insert the disc, click play, and you are in the movie :) no need to download anything or select anything. Now quality: what TV do you have? monitor? is it connected over HDMI or DVI?
BR movie on Full HD or even 720p TV looks bollocks(in a good way). I had HD ready(720p) TV, and BR movie looked fantastic, put normal dvd in and watch it over the same TV, it looks really bad. Now I have full HD TV, and even 720p BR disc rip looks unbelievably better. And I am not even talking about original discs.
in your case I am not sure, but mayby your experience was f*cked by HDCP(HD copy protection), which downgrades the quality of the movie if it does not detect HDMI TV connected to your player(PC).
and by the way, harry potter last movie sucks :(
And also, have you heard HD sound from BR disc? With good quality speaker system it sounds fantastic!!!
To really appreciate BR technology, you would need:
Full HD TV(37inch and up)
BR player(BR rom, PS3)
Quality surround sound system with quality amp
double edition of transformers movies(1st and 2nd)
