Nvidia chipsets from the orginal nForce to the current nForce 4. nForce 4 SLI and Ultra are putting the hurt on the other chipset makers.

I saw this article on Ars Technica. What a bombshell. As much as I like AMD, this will not necessarily be a good thing for AMD chipset customers. All I can see at the moment is the prospect of higher prices as there will be no competition. First Uli, SiS and Via. Now Nvidia looks to be the next fatality in the chipset wars on the horizon. Not a good thing.

Although it really belongs in this topic group, there is already
a growing thread on this at:
Board index ‹ CPUs ‹ K10: Barcelona, Shanghai, Quad-Core Opteron, Phenom
Nvidia doesn’t plan new AMD chipsets

And the news is not that surprising. AMD is doing it's own
production chipsets now, and spIntel seems to be less than
encouraging towards Nv. It's not a growth market for Nv,
and they are also having serious issues with their core GPU
business, on several counts. They need to mind the store.

I don't think higher prices of AMD chipset is possible. A chipset is sold with a CPU and in fact the very reason of nVidia existing this business is precisely more and more chipset functionality are being put onto the CPU itself (the last one being the video). Chipset prices are falling, which will continue to be the trend, and nVidia can't compete if they're not also selling CPU.

AMD won't dare to increase their chipset prices unless they want to go out of business with no MB available to sell their CPUs to.

"...spIntel seems to be less than encouraging towards Nv."

Is there the slightest chance of intel repeating history by not having enough chipsets for the market again?
